Great Baddow churches

An introduction to local village churches. (last updated on 2 January 2009)
St Mary's Church

St Mary's Church

Located by the junction of the High Street, Church Street and Vicarage Lane, St Mary's is one of 3 Anglican churches in Baddow, the other two being St Paul's in Beehive Lane, and the Meadgate Community church. The churches are strongly evangelical in tradition and preach the love of God through, and in Christ, and encourage regular Bible reading and witness through mission and service to the community.

Services at St Mary's are led by one of the ordained priests and a team of lay members. Worship is lively and mixes traditional hymns with modern songs. There is an active music group which plays at services. Regular house groups meet for prayer and Bible study.

The three churches produce a quarterly newspaper, ‘Baddow Life’, which is distributed to houses in the village. More information is available from the St Mary's Church website

Meadgate Church Meadgate Church

When Meadgate Church was set up, it was intended to be ecumenical (a Church which is welcoming to Christians of all backgrounds). 40 years on this what we still aim to be and do. Part of the Great Baddow Team Ministry, CoE, and reaching out to all with the love and goodness of God.

United Reformed Church

United Reformed Church

This church is located adjacent to the library in the High Street with a building originally built in the 19th century, but since extended to provide a light and airy sanctuary in which to worship God. The church is part of the Chelmsford group of URC churches and is one of a pastorate grouping which combines Danbury, Great Baddow, Howe Green URCs and the ecumenical church project of St Saviour's at Springfield.

A short history of our church

Worship is in the reformed tradition and both ordained ministers and lay preachers guide worship each week. In September 2006, Jon Sermon was ordained and inducted as minister of Great Baddow URC and 2 other local URC churches at Danbury and Howe Green.

Worship takes place each Sunday at 1045am with Communion monthly unless otherwise stated. A Bible study group meets and there are regular mid week coffee mornings. The church members and friends extend a warm welcome to anyone wishing to join them in Christian fellowship.

Latest news (January 2009)

Our Advent celebrations included a Sunday afternoon  Christingle service for the Brownies and Rainbows that meet in our church and their parents, and a Tuesday evening Carol Service, both led by our Minister, Revd. Jon Sermon.

On Christmas morning some of the Church family met to celebrate the Birth of Jesus together; one led the worship, one played the organ as we sang carols, two or three gave favourite Christmas readings or a prayer, Rosemary sang (quite beautifully) a carol to the old English tune Greensleeves and we heard the Christmas story read from Matthew’s Gospel. Then at the end, after we had shared The Grace, we kissed or hugged or shook hands and wished each other Christmas joys as we went to our homes to share this joy with our families and friends.

The Worldwide Church of God meets each Saturday at 1pm in the United Reformed Church for a study and discussion meeting. Light refreshments are served before the study and discussion meetings commence.  After the meeting all are invited to stay for more refreshments and fellowship.
