Proposed Development at 21 Church Street (current Dale Hire site)
An outline planning application (ref: 08/007687/OUT) has been submitted to Chelmsford Council for the erection of 14 one and two bedroomed studio apartments on this site. Considering the impact of such new building work on the conservation area, it is pleasing to note that the Parish Council has objected to this proposal. Several other local residents affected by the propoals have also objected, stating concerns about the scale of the building, over development, style and match to existing building environment, parking and other issues.
Village Design Statement AGM
Residents were invited to the third AGM on 14 May at
the Bell Centre to review the latest draft design statement. A
village design statement is used to outline how the character
and built environment of a village neighbourhood should be considered
and respected in new building projects. It does not replace formal
planning and building requirements but proposed new build is expected
to take into account the design statement to ensure approrpriate
expectations are met.
Reports were provided on activity during the year and details
provided on the current draft. A large number of photos were
on display demonstrating the village roads, buildings and features,
some of which are referenced in the document.
Appreciation was recorded to Brian Roscoe, Chairman, and other members
of the team responsible for preparing the draft statement.
Considering the impact the design statement has on local residents it
is a pity that only a small number of residents attended this event,
although comment was made that publicity was limited.
Chelmsford French Circle
For those interested in French language and culture, the Chelmsford French Circle meets fortnightly at Sandon Village Hall for talks (given in French) usually by members of the Alliance Francaise. The talks may be geographical, historical, political, literary or culinary (with tastings). They also have a very popular cabaret evening and special events at Christmas and for the 14 Juillet. More information.
Zebra crossings, Baddow Road
Both new zebra crossings in Baddow Road are now in use but some comments have been received about the siting of the one near the entrance drive to the Millennium centre. Apparently, the narrowing of Baddow Road in the immediate vicinity of the crossing has resulted in some drivers using the cut in area immediately following as a parking layby, and observation has shown that some people are continuing to cross the road in the vicinity of the crossing but not actually on the crossing itself.
U3A news
The recent excursion by the Church Visiting Group to the shrines at Walsingham was a very enjoyable day out with oppportunity to visit the Anglican shrine, and Little Walsingham village itself which has a lot of old and medieval buildings. After a couple of hours in the village, we moved on to the Roman Catholic shrine at Houghton St Giles to see the Slipper chapel originating from 1325, and the modern Chapel of the Reconciliation, constructed in 1982. Both shrines exude a calm and peaceful environment, and welcome visitors, whether pilgrims or not.
