Introduction
For newcomers to the site, this newsletter is circulated monthly to registered site members and friends, to supplement information on the site itself. Please forward to colleagues and other interested individuals in order to publicise the site. If you are a recent newcomer to the site, welcome - your readership is appreciated.
Changes to local businesses
Dale Hire has now vacated its premises on Church Street and moved to 39 Robjohns Road, Chelmsford; the adjacent hairdressing parlour is now Salon Nineteen.
Tiffanys cafe at the Vineyards has announced its intention to open on Mondays instead of Sundays from Sunday 3 August.
Patrick Green, a well known hardware store and general merchant in Ingatestone is advertising on this site and invites local residents to take the 10 minute journey to Ingatestone. Having at one time lived in Ingatestone, I can recommend this shop for the wide range of household and garden items stocked.
Forthcoming event - "It's Show Time"
Many local residents will be aware of the local Children's hospice, 'Little Havens' and the regular fundraising undertaken by some Great Baddow residents. This year the annual "It's Show Time" event takes place on Sunday 17 August at the new venue of Purleigh Halt, Barons Lane, Purleigh, Chelmsford with the kind permission of the Livermore family. Lots of live entertainment - come and enjoy a festive day out and support this worthy cause. Full details are on the web site and on posters around the village.
Great Baddow Play scheme
This runs from Monday 4th August - Friday 8 August and is for children aged 6-11. Morning and afternoon sessions between 10-12 noon and 2-4 pm. There will be various activities including crafts and games. Full details on the Parish Council website.

U3A news
At the monthly meeting on 9th July, members listened to Tony Earle talking about his career spanning 40 years at Kodak, and in particular, the development of the camera.
It was in 1885, that a bank clerk named George Eastman established the Kodak company and built a factory at Rochester (USA) to create cameras for all. In England, a factory was built at Harrow in 1889 and production commenced in 1891.
Success was achieved when pictures were possible using paper film, and photography was soon popularised. The first cheap camera for the masses was the ‘Brownie ‘ which was built of cardboard, took 2¼ x 2¼ pictures using a camera which sold for 1$. Later ‘Brownie’ camera models were produced, the final model being produced in 1962.
During the course of photographic history, Kodak developed various camera technologies some of which remained in production until the latter part of the last century e.g. the Instamatic. Today, the emphasis is on the continuing merger of picture and telecommunication techniques in the camera phone and in 5 – 10 years time traditional roll film cameras will probably become obsolete.
Overall, this was a fascinating subject and Tony illustrated his talk with many slides showing the history of Kodak and pioneers in early photography, as well as providing a display of Kodak cameras from various periods in the company’s history.
Bus route changes
Routes 40/50 continue to be diverted Mondays -
Fridays via Baddow Road and Longfield Road thus not serving
Meadgate
shops. This diversion is expected to continue for a further
month or
until the roadworks currently taking place on Meagate Avenue
are completed.
Hylands Park
The main website highlights the garden
centre at Sandon, as well as local flowers within
the village and at RHS
Hyde Hall which was mentioned in last month's newsletter. It
was at the latter on a recent visit we were fortunate
to see a brown hare nestling in meadow grass.
We also recently visited Hylands
Park, and again the gardens at present are very colourful and
worth a visit along with the house. Chelmsford and Great
Baddow are fortunate in having free access to such a large estate with
extensive parkland - and the restored house - in close proximity to a
major urban area.
Please note that the gardens will be closed from 15 -
24 August and access restrictions will apply between 4 and 24
August because of the 2008 V festival.
