Chris Harvey
I was born in Sale, Cheshire and studied mathematics at Reading University. Following graduation I worked for a computer manufacturer (Marconi) before joining a major IT consultancy (Scicon), where I specialised in health care systems development. In 1983 I established my own consultancy business and later in 1990 joined the NHS. Latterly until retirement I was a manager responsible for one of the major NHS websites.
In February 2006 I created the Great Baddow Online website to serve the needs of the local village community.
My hobbies and leisure interests include holidays in Norfolk and Switzerland, and transport history. I recently joined the Great Baddow local history group and am supporting development of a corresponding section on this website including an index to the archives. I am married to Angela, and am a Christian, worshipping locally at the United Reformed Church.
My detailed, professional CV describing my career to date, skills and experience.
I graduated in 1967 from Reading University with an honours degree in mathematics. I also have a diploma in health information (University of Warwick, 1986) and a Master's degree in Business Administration (Leicester Polytechnic, 1990).
Following graduation I was first employed by Marconi, then subsequently with a computer consultancy (Scicon) and various user organisations. In March 1983 I became freelance until November 1987 when I established Healthcare Systems Limited to market IT and management consultancy to the healthcare and related sectors. I was director of this company until joining the Mid Essex Health Authority as Medical Audit Support Manager in October 1990. Subsequently in 1996 I moved to Great Ormond Street Hospital as an IT project manager, and successfully managed the Trust’s Year 2000 project.
My final employer was the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) which I joined in 2000. With NICE I managed key E-Media projects including in 2006-7 the procurement of a replacement content management system for the Institute’s website.
Overall, I have over 40 years experience in IT and management consultancy, including thirty years applied to healthcare (last sixteen years employed by the NHS). I have provided consultancy to health authorities, provider units (trusts), DoH and DTI.
I have extensive experience of IT project management, website content management, system procurement and related IT responsibilities and have worked at all levels in organisations, managed teams up to 6 staff and am experienced in running seminars and workshops. I have also published a number of papers, mainly on the use of computers in hospitals.
I left NICE at the end of March 2007, and my significant health care experience makes me suitable for a project management, business role in the public health care sector; but I am open to offers for consultancy or similar work in the private sector, and other related fields such as new media.
Projects since leaving NICE include:
- Training workshops on Vista and MS Word for members of the local U3A
- An IT integration study for a local hospice
- Revisions to a local charity website.
