Galleyend and Marconi Tower

A walk to Galleyend via Vicarage Lane (updated with photos - June 2007).

Leave the Vineyards via Pump Hill and on reaching the High Street bear left. Proceed to the junction with Vicarage Lane at the White Horse pub and walk up Vicarage Lane.

Vicarage Lane/Park View CrescentPassing Park Crescent on the left leading to the Maltings estate, the lane bends slightly right by the Almshouses, a row of linked bungalows opposite a couple of semi-detached cottages on the right.

Green Lane by cemetaryBeyond the next turning on the left Heycroft way, the road narrows (take care, no footpath beyond the derestricted sign) and continues to a sharp left hand bend by the Lawn cemetery. A bridle path runs straight ahead from this bend and passes by the cemetery on the left flank. This path is popular with walkers and in autumn it is possible to pick wild blackberries from the bushes which border it. Three quarters of the way along, there are some ditches which may contain stagnant water on the left so take care with children and dogs.

At the far end, the path exits onto Brook lane, near Galleyend. Turn left here and walk a few hundred yards to the T junction which has a bungalow on the corner. Turn left back onto the far end of Vicarage Lane.

Marconi Tower, Image reproduced by permission of copyright holder, Andrew PickessIn the distance you will see the radar tower at the back of the BAe Systems site which was installed when the site belonged to the former Marconi Company. The image here is reproduced by permission of copyright holder, Andrew Pickess. This narrow lane heads back to the village running between open fields and it is possible to walk across some of these fields using public footpaths/rights of way. As the radar tower is neared the lane narrows further and after a couple of sharp bends opens out in front of the allotments and cemetery..

From here you can walk past the cemetery entrance back to the junction with the bridle path, and turn right. Continue back down Vicarage Lane and retrace your steps to the Vineyards.

Estimated distance 2-3 miles Walking time 1-1.5 hours. Going: Roads and country lanes plus the bridle path which can be muddy after rainfall.
