Meadgate and the recreation ground

A walk to Meadgate and across the Recreation ground (updated with photos - June 2007).

Cross the road opposite the Vineyards restaurant (currently closed)and walk up New Road. At the top the road leads into Hall Close which ends at the Infants/Junior School.

Baddow Hall ParkWhen you go past the gates into Hall Close, turn left onto Baddow Hall Park by the play area and head towards the far corner, coming out on Maldon Road opposite the side of the fire station.

Bear left, cross the road and proceed down Longmead avenue. Pass the entrance to the fire station, you will also pass on the left hand side  the new Village surgery. A hundred yards or so down the road bears right then left and you pass over a stream which is fed from the lakes in the recreation ground and passes under Baddow Road near the Blue Lion pub.

Footpath between Meadgate and Baddow Road
The road is now more or less straight and you should continue for several hundred yards until you reach number 2 which in summer is usually very attractive with flower beds. Immediately beyond is a footpath on the left.

This path goes behind the houses and runs all the way up to Baddow Road coming out opposite the road to the recreation ground.

Roberts Court (housing for the elderly)
Carry on down this road past Roberts Court retirement housing for the elderly and turn left in front of the recreation ground.

Community Centre (Millennium building)In front of you is the Community Centre, rebuilt for the Millennium.

Keep this on your right and follow the path round by the tennis courts and continue to where the path divides. If you wish turn right and walk up to the pods where you may see some of the local ducks.

Otherwise, turning left you exit by the recycling containers and come out in Baddow Road, approximately 50 yards from the Blue Lion pub. Turn right, walk past the pub and cross immediately to the right of the mini roundabout in front of Marrable House, at present unoccupied. Take care of traffic flows. Walk up the ramp to the Vineyards shopping precinct.

Distance about 1.5 miles. Easy going but fields can be slightly muddy under foot. Note that the final walk up the ramp is at a noticeable gradient.
